Start with protection, then select appearance and recovery direction
Coffee packaging is often a laminate in which each layer has a job: print surface, stiffness, oxygen or light barrier, strength, and heat sealing. The visible outside layer does not describe the complete structure.
Kraft-look structures
Kraft creates a natural tactile appearance, but many kraft coffee bags include barrier films or coatings. Confirm the full laminate before making a paper or recyclability claim.
Foil and metallized laminates
Aluminum foil and VMPET can support strong light, oxygen, and moisture protection. The right choice depends on shelf-life targets, flex resistance, print result, cost, and destination-market requirements.
PET and PE directions
PET commonly supports print and strength while PE is often used for sealing. Mono-material directions may improve compatibility with selected recycling streams, but performance and local collection rules must be confirmed.
Compostable directions
Compostable claims require suitable certification, clear disposal wording, and access to the right facilities. Ask for evidence that applies to the complete finished structure, not only one component.
Questions to confirm before approval
